Aaliyah is an Arabic feminine name derived from the root a-l-w, meaning high, exalted, or sublime, and functions as the feminine form of Aali. It entered widespread use in English-speaking countries, particularly within African American communities, during the late twentieth century. The name gained global recognition largely through the American R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton, who used only her first name professionally.
