Alan

Alan is a name of disputed Celtic origin, most likely derived from a Breton or Old Breton root possibly meaning rock or possibly related to a word meaning handsome or cheerful. It was brought to Britain by Breton followers of William the Conqueror, most notably Alan Rufus, one of the most powerful Norman lords in England, and became firmly established in medieval English and Scottish use. The name also exists independently in Kurdish tradition, where it means flag or banner. Related forms include Allan, Allen, Alain, and the feminine Alana.
