feminine · Slovene origin
Alenka is a Slovene diminutive form of Alena, itself a short form of Helena, which derives from the ancient Greek name Helene, possibly connected to the Greek word helene meaning torch or corposant, or alternatively linked to Helenos, a name associated with Greece itself. The name has been widely used in Slovenia and among South Slavic communities as an affectionate everyday form. It gained particular cultural resonance through the Slovene translation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in which the protagonist Alice was rendered as Alenka. Closely related forms include Alena, Helena, and Elena.
