Alexandr

Alexandr is the Czech and Russian form of the ancient Greek name Alexandros, composed of the elements alexein, meaning to defend, and aner (genitive andros), meaning man, giving the overall sense of defender of men. The name rose to worldwide prominence through Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king of the 4th century BCE whose conquests spread Greek culture across much of the known world. The Russian form Alexandr has been borne by several tsars, most notably Alexander I and Alexander II. Closely related forms include Aleksander, Alexandru, and Alexandre, along with the feminine Aleksandra.
