Alija

Alija is the Bosnian form of the Arabic name Ali, derived from the Arabic root ʿ-l-w, meaning high, elevated, or exalted. The name carries deep significance in Islamic tradition, as Ali ibn Abi Talib was a cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the fourth caliph, venerated especially in Shia Islam. Alija gained particular prominence in the Balkans through Alija Izetbegović, the first president of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina.
