Alix

Alix is a medieval French form of the Germanic name Adalheidis, composed of the elements adal, meaning noble, and heid, meaning kind or type, giving an overall sense of noble nature. It was widely used among French and Frankish nobility during the Middle Ages and was borne by several queens and countesses, including Alix of France, daughter of Louis VII. The name is a cognate of the English Alice and the German Adelaide, all descending from the same Old High German root. Modern use of Alix occurs across French-speaking countries and increasingly as an international variant.
