Birgit

Birgit is a North Germanic form of the Old Irish name Brigid, derived from the Proto-Celtic root brig, meaning strength or exalted one. The name gained widespread veneration through Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of the patron saints of Ireland, and later through Saint Birgitta of Sweden, the medieval mystic and founder of the Bridgettine Order, who made the form Birgit especially prominent in Scandinavia. It remains common throughout Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and other northern European countries. Closely related forms include Brigitte, Brigitta, Bridget, and Birgitta.
