Birgit is a Scandinavian form of the Old Irish name Brighid, ultimately derived from the Proto-Celtic root brig, meaning high or exalted. The name is closely associated with Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland's patron saints, whose veneration spread widely through medieval Europe and helped carry the name across linguistic boundaries.
