Brandon is an English given name derived from a place name and surname, itself rooted in the Old English elements brom, meaning broom (the shrub), and dun, meaning hill, thus carrying the sense of hill where broom grows. It was transferred into use as a given name from the surname in the twentieth century and became especially popular in the United States and other English-speaking countries during the latter half of the century.
