Brigitta

Brigitta is a Latinate form of the Old Irish name Brigid, derived from the Proto-Celtic element *brigā meaning "power" or "exalted one." The name became widely used across continental Europe largely through the influence of Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of the patron saints of Ireland, as well as the Swedish mystic Saint Birgitta of Vadstena, whose own name is a Scandinavian cognate. Brigitta spread particularly into German, Dutch, and Hungarian naming traditions as a formal elaboration of the same root. Related forms include Brigitte, Birgitta, Bridget, and Brigida.
