Brigitte is the French form of the Irish name Brighid (also spelled Bríd or Bride), derived from the Old Irish element brígh, meaning power or strength. The name is closely associated with Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland's patron saints, as well as the pre-Christian goddess Brigid, a figure of fire, healing, and poetry in Celtic tradition. The name spread widely across Europe through Christian veneration and has produced numerous cognates and variants, including Bridget in English, Brigitta in German and Scandinavian languages, Birgit in Nordic countries, and Brighid in its original Irish form. In modern times the name gained additional cultural prominence through the Swedish-born French actress Brigitte Bardot.
