Brita is a Scandinavian contracted form of Birgitta, itself a Norse adaptation of the Irish name Brighid, derived from the Old Irish element brígh meaning power or strength. The name gained wide currency across Scandinavia largely through the veneration of Saint Birgitta of Sweden, the fourteenth-century mystic and founder of the Bridgettine order.
