Cáit is the Irish form of Catherine, ultimately derived from the Greek name Katharos, meaning pure or clean, which passed into Latin as Katharina and spread widely through medieval Europe via the veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It is the standard hypocoristic and formal Irish-language equivalent of Catherine and Kate, commonly used throughout Ireland. Related forms include Caitlín, Catriona, and the anglicised Katherine.
