Cailean

Cailean is a Scottish Gaelic masculine name derived from the Old Gaelic element cailean, meaning young dog or whelp, and sometimes interpreted more broadly as youth or young one. It was notably borne by Cailean Mór, a thirteenth-century Scottish chieftain and ancestor of Clan Campbell, making it a name of particular significance in Highland tradition. The anglicized form Colin, widely used in Scotland and beyond, developed from this name, as did the Irish Gaelic cognate Coilín.
