Caoimhín is an Irish Gaelic name derived from the Old Irish element caomh, meaning gentle, kind, or beloved, combined with a diminutive suffix, giving the overall sense of little gentle one or dear one. It is the native Irish form of the Latinized name Coemgenus, borne most famously by Saint Coemgen of Glendalough, a sixth-century monk and hermit venerated as the patron saint of Dublin. The name was Anglicized as Kevin, which became widely popular throughout the English-speaking world, particularly following medieval devotion to the saint. Caoimhe, sharing the same caomh root, is the common feminine equivalent in Irish.
