Catalina

Catalina is the Spanish and Corsican form of Katherine, ultimately derived from the Greek name Aikaterine, whose meaning remains debated but is often associated with the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. The name was widely popularized in medieval Europe through the veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and later Saint Catherine of Siena. Catalina Island off the coast of California takes its name from the same tradition, as Spanish explorers named it on the feast day of Saint Catherine. Cătalina is the Romanian equivalent, and other cognates across languages include Catherine, Katarina, and Katarzyna.
