Catherina is a Latinate form of the Greek name Katharinē, which is traditionally associated with the Greek root katharos, meaning pure or clean. The name gained widespread use throughout medieval Europe largely through the veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a fourth-century martyr.
