Cato is a Latin name whose exact root is uncertain, though it is most commonly connected to the Latin adjective catus, meaning wise or shrewd. It was borne most famously by two prominent Romans, Cato the Elder, the stern statesman and moralist of the second century BCE, and his great-grandson Cato the Younger, who became a symbol of Republican virtue and Stoic principle.
