Christel is a German, Dutch, and Scandinavian diminutive of Christine or Christina, which derive from the Latin Christianus and ultimately from the Greek Christos, meaning anointed one, itself a translation of the Hebrew Mashiach. The name spread widely across Europe following the adoption of Christianity, when names honoring Christ became common.
