Chucky is an English diminutive of Charles, which itself derives from the Germanic name Karl, rooted in a word meaning man or free man. The name gained widespread recognition through American popular culture, most notably as the name of the fictional killer doll in the Child's Play horror film franchise beginning in 1988. As a pet form, it sits alongside Chuck, which arose as a rhyming alteration of the nickname Charlie. Charles and its variants Karel, Carlo, and Carlos share the same ancient Germanic root.
