The name Conchobar is Old Irish in origin, most likely derived from the elements con (hound or wolf) and cobar (desiring or lover of), yielding an approximate sense of lover of hounds or hound-lover. It was borne most famously by Conchobar mac Nessa, the legendary king of Ulster in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology, which kept the name in prominent use throughout medieval Ireland. The name evolved over time into the anglicized forms Conor and Connor, both of which remain widely used in Ireland and among the Irish diaspora today. Cornelius was sometimes used as a Latin substitute for it in ecclesiastical contexts.
