Corné is a French and Dutch shortened form of Cornelius, a Latin family name of uncertain ultimate origin, possibly derived from the Latin word cornu, meaning horn, though some scholars link it to the Etruscan element. The name was borne by the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio and later spread widely through Christian Europe owing to Saint Cornelius, a third-century pope and martyr. In the Netherlands and Flanders, Corné functions as an informal given name in its own right, distinct from the fuller forms Cornelius and Cornelis.
