Dan

Dan is a Hebrew name derived from the root din, meaning to judge or to vindicate. In the Hebrew Bible, Dan is the fifth son of Jacob and the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, whose name is explained in Genesis as reflecting his mother Bilhah's sense of divine vindication. The name has long been used independently in English-speaking countries and also functions as a short form of Daniel, from the Hebrew meaning God is my judge.
