Diane

Diane is the French form of Diana, the ancient Latin name of the Roman goddess of the moon and hunting, whose name is thought to derive from an Indo-European root meaning divine or heavenly, related to the element *dyeu- meaning sky or day. The name was widely adopted across medieval and Renaissance Europe through admiration of classical mythology. It gained particular popularity in the English-speaking world during the twentieth century alongside its Latin form Diana. Related forms include Dianne, Dianna, and the Italian and Spanish Diana.
