Doris

Doris is an ancient Greek name derived from the ethnic term Doris, referring to the Dorians, a major Greek-speaking people whose name may ultimately connect to a root meaning gift, though the precise etymology remains debated. In Greek mythology, Doris was a sea goddess, daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, and mother of the fifty sea nymphs known as the Nereids. The name spread into wide English and European use during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, becoming especially popular in the mid-twentieth century, partly through the fame of American actress and singer Doris Day.
