Eógan is an Old Irish name derived from the earlier form Eochu or a Celtic root related to the concept of youth, and it is generally considered a Goidelic equivalent of the Latin-derived name Eugenius, meaning well-born. The name was borne by several early Irish kings and saints, including Eógan Mór, a legendary king of Munster, which helped establish its prestige throughout medieval Ireland. It gave rise to the Scottish Gaelic form Eòghan and is closely related to the anglicized forms Owen and Eugene, as well as the Welsh cognate Owain.
