Eddie

Eddie is an English pet form of Edward or Edmund, both rooted in the Old English elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and either weard, meaning guard, or mund, meaning protector. The name gained widespread independent use from the nineteenth century onward, bolstered by numerous notable bearers including American entertainer Eddie Cantor and musician Eddie Van Halen. It is also used as a short form of Edgar, Edwin, and Eduardo in various cultural contexts. Ed, Eddy, and Ned are closely related forms sharing the same Old English foundation.
