Edie is an English diminutive of Edith, an Old English name composed of the elements ēad, meaning wealth or fortune, and ġȳð, meaning war or strife. The name was common among Anglo-Saxon royalty before the Norman Conquest and was revived in the Victorian era. Edie gained independent use as a given name in the twentieth century, partly through cultural figures such as Edie Sedgwick, the American socialite and model associated with Andy Warhol's circle. Related forms include Edith, Eda, and Edyta.
