Elaine is an Old French form of Helen, ultimately derived from the ancient Greek Helene, whose root is debated but often linked to the Greek word for torch or light. The name gained wide currency in the English-speaking world largely through Arthurian legend, where Elaine of Astolat and Elaine of Corbenic are significant figures in the stories surrounding Lancelot and the Holy Grail. Its popularity was further reinforced by Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King in the nineteenth century. Related forms include Elena, Eleanor, Ellen, and Helena.
