Els is a Germanic short form of names beginning with the element alja or adal, meaning "other" or "noble," most commonly arising as a diminutive of Elisabeth or Elsbeth in Dutch and Low German speaking regions. Elisabeth itself traces back through Latin and Greek to the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning "my God is an oath" or "my God is abundance," borne in the Hebrew Bible by the wife of Aaron.
