Eoghan

Eoghan is an Old Irish masculine name generally derived from a Celtic root meaning born of the yew, cognate with the Welsh name Owain and ultimately related to the Latin Eugenius, meaning well-born. In Irish mythology and history it was borne by several important figures, including Eoghan Mór, a legendary king of Munster whose descendants formed the Eóganacht dynasties, and Eoghan mac Néill, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. The name gave rise to the anglicized forms Owen and Eugene, which became widespread across Britain and continental Europe. Ewan and Euan are related Scottish Gaelic variants of the same ancient name.
