feminine · Scottish origin
Fiona is an anglicized form of the Scottish Gaelic element fionn, meaning white or fair, and was popularized as a given name by the Scottish poet James Macpherson in his Ossian poems of the 1760s, as well as by the writer William Sharp, who used the pen name Fiona Macleod in the late nineteenth century. Its use spread widely across the English-speaking world through the twentieth century. The Irish form Fíona is a separate name derived from fíon, meaning wine. Related forms include Fionnuala and the masculine Fionn.
