Franny

Franny is an English diminutive of Frances, which derives from the Latin Franciscus, meaning free one or person from Francia, ultimately rooted in the Germanic tribal name of the Franks. It shares its origins with Francis, Francesco, and François, all tracing back to the same Latin source. The name gained literary prominence through J. D. Salinger's 1961 novella Franny and Zooey, cementing Franny as a warm, affectionate short form used independently as well as a nickname.
