Gavin is a medieval Scottish and Welsh name, most likely derived from the Welsh Gawain, itself thought to come from the Old Welsh Gwalchmei, meaning roughly "white hawk" or "hawk of the plain." It was borne famously by Sir Gawain, the legendary nephew of King Arthur and one of the Knights of the Round Table, which kept the name in circulation throughout the Middle Ages. The name fell into wider use across the English-speaking world during the twentieth century. Gawain and Gawen are among its closest historical variants.
