Gena is most commonly an English and Russian short form of names beginning with Gen-, particularly Eugenia, which derives from the Greek eugenes, meaning well-born or of noble origin. In Russian and other Slavic traditions it also serves as a diminutive of Gennadiy, from the Greek Gennadios, rooted in gennao, meaning to give birth or to beget, implying nobility of character.
