Gerrit is a Dutch and Frisian form of Gerard, ultimately derived from the Old High German elements ger, meaning spear, and hard, meaning brave or strong. The name has been common in the Netherlands for centuries and is associated with the celebrated Dutch Golden Age painter Gerrit Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt.
