Gréta is a Hungarian and Icelandic short form of Margareta, itself derived from the Latin Margarita and ultimately from the ancient Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name spread widely across Europe through the veneration of Saint Margaret of Antioch and later Saint Margaret of Scotland. Gréta is the standard Hungarian and Icelandic rendering of the pet form that appears as Greta in German and Scandinavian traditions, Greet in Dutch, and Gryta in older Scots usage. The Swedish actress Greta Garbo brought international prominence to this family of names in the twentieth century.
