Gréta is a Central European form, particularly Hungarian and Icelandic, of the name Margaret, ultimately derived from the Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name passed into Latin as Margarita and gave rise to a wide family of diminutive and short forms across Europe, with Gréta representing a contracted version similar to Greta in Swedish and German.
