Heintje is a Dutch and Low German diminutive of Heinrich, which derives from the Old High German name Heimirich, composed of the elements heim, meaning home or estate, and rih, meaning ruler or power, giving the overall sense of ruler of the home. The name gained particular popular recognition through Heintje Simons, the Dutch child singer who rose to fame in the late 1960s under the single name Heintje. It is functionally the Low German and Dutch equivalent of the more widely known English Henry and French Henri, and shares its root with cognates such as Hendrik, Heinz, and Henk.
