Henriëtte is a French feminine diminutive of Henri, which itself derives from the Old High German name Heimirich, composed of the elements heim, meaning home, and rīhhi, meaning power or ruler, giving the overall sense of ruler of the home. The name spread widely through European aristocracy during the seventeenth century, notably associated with Henriette Anne of England, daughter of King Charles I, who became Duchess of Orléans. It was particularly fashionable in France and the Netherlands, where it remained in common use through the nineteenth century. Related forms include Henrietta, Harriet, and Enriqueta.
