masculine · English origin
Henry comes from the Germanic name Heimirich, composed of the elements heim, meaning home, and ric, meaning power or ruler, giving an overall sense of ruler of the home or lord of the estate. The name was introduced to England by the Normans and became enormously popular among medieval royalty, being borne by eight kings of England as well as numerous Holy Roman Emperors. Its Latinized form Henricus gave rise to the French Henri, the Spanish and Portuguese Henrique, the Italian Enrico, and the German Heinrich. Harry, originally a medieval English vernacular form, is now widely used as an independent given name.
