Hubertus

Hubertus is the Latinized form of the Germanic name Hugibert, composed of the elements hug, meaning mind or spirit, and beraht, meaning bright or famous, giving an overall sense of bright mind or famous intellect. The name was widely used in medieval Europe largely through the influence of Saint Hubertus of Liège, an eighth-century bishop venerated as the patron saint of hunters, whose legendary conversion experience involved a vision of a stag bearing a crucifix. The name remains in use particularly in German and Dutch-speaking regions. Closely related forms include Hubert, Herbert, and the Dutch Huibert.
