Ianis is a Romanian masculine given name derived from the same Latin and ultimately Hebrew root as John, from Yohanan, meaning God is gracious. It functions as a regional variant of the widespread European name Johannes and its many descendants, belonging to the same vast family that includes Ioan, the standard Romanian form, as well as Ivan, Jean, and Giovanni. The name has gained contemporary visibility in Romania partly through Ianis Hagi, the Romanian footballer and son of the legendary player Gheorghe Hagi.
