Imogene is most likely a variant of Imogen, a name that first appears in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline (1611), where it is widely believed to result from a misprint of the Celtic name Innogen, derived from an Old Irish or Brythonic root meaning maiden or girl. Some scholars connect the underlying form to the Gaulish or Brythonic element *en-igen, meaning daughter or offspring.
