Ioann

Ioann is the older Church Slavonic form of the name that entered Russian through ecclesiastical Greek Ioannes, itself derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning God is gracious. It was the standard form used in Russian Orthodox religious contexts, appearing in the names of saints and clergy throughout medieval Rus. The more common modern Russian vernacular form is Ivan, while other cognates across European languages include John, Jean, Johann, and Johannes.
