Iris

From Ancient Greek, Iris derives from the word iris, meaning rainbow. In Greek mythology, Iris was the goddess who personified the rainbow and served as a messenger between the gods and mortals, lending the name its vivid association with color and divine communication. The name was later applied to the iris flower, whose blossoms appear in a wide spectrum of colors, and to the colored part of the eye. The Portuguese and Icelandic form Íris carries the same origin and meaning.
