Iva is a Slavic feminine name with two distinct but related origins. In Bulgarian, Croatian, and Serbian traditions it derives from the South Slavic word for the willow tree, connecting the name to a long-standing poetic association with that plant. In Czech, Slovak, and Slovene use it also functions as a feminine short form of names beginning with the Germanic element iv, meaning yew, the same root found in Ivo and Ivan's feminine counterpart Ivana.
