Jöns is a Swedish contracted form of Johannes, the Latin rendering of the Greek Ioannes, which itself derives from the Hebrew Yohanan, meaning God is gracious. It was a common masculine name in medieval Scandinavia and remains recognizable in Swedish cultural history, most notably through the chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who developed much of modern chemical notation. Related forms include Hans, Jan, Johan, and Jon.
