Jasmine is derived from the Persian word yasamin, referring to the fragrant flowering plant of the same name, which entered European languages through Arabic yasmin. The name spread widely across the Islamic world before being adopted into French and then English during the nineteenth century, when flower names became fashionable given names in the West. It gained additional popular recognition through the Disney character Princess Jasmine in the 1992 film Aladdin. Related forms include Yasmin, Yasmine, and Jessamine.
