Javier

Javier is a Spanish given name derived from the Basque place name Etxeberria, meaning new house, which was the ancestral home of the sixteenth-century Navarrese missionary Saint Francis Xavier, one of the founders of the Jesuit order. The place name element xabier or xabin, reflecting the Basque word for house, passed into Spanish as Javier through the fame of the saint. It is the standard Spanish equivalent of Xavier, and the two forms are used interchangeably across Spanish-speaking and other Catholic cultures. Xabier is a Basque variant, while Xavier remains common in Portuguese, Catalan, and English contexts.
