Jelisaveta

Jelisaveta is the Serbian form of Elizabeth, ultimately derived from the Hebrew name Elisheba, composed of the elements el, meaning God, and shava, meaning oath or perhaps abundance. The name appears in the Hebrew Bible as the wife of Aaron, and its Greek form Elisavet spread widely through Christian tradition in honor of Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist. Jelisaveta has been borne by several Serbian queens and noblewomen, giving it a strong aristocratic resonance in South Slavic history. Related forms include the Greek Elisavet, the Russian Elizaveta, and the widely used English Elizabeth.
