Jez

Jez is an English shortened form of Jeremy or Jezebel, though in modern use it functions almost exclusively as a masculine nickname for Jeremy. Jeremy itself derives from the Hebrew name Yirmeyahu, meaning Yahweh will exalt or Yahweh will loosen, borne by the biblical prophet whose name passed into English through the Latin Jeremias and Old French Jeremie. The form Jez gained informal currency in British English during the twentieth century as a casual given name in its own right. Related forms include Jerry, Jem, and Jeremy.
